In the novel
“The Silent One” by Joy Cowley. The theme is prejudice.
Prejudice is a judgment about people without experience knowledge or facts. For example we had seen prejudice in America.
Jonasi, “The Silent One”, is deaf and mute. “The boy cannot hear or speak, and it’s no disease. He was born with silence” (pg : 113)
The villager mocked him and said he was useless. Jonasi was the main character. He didn’t get to go on a pig hunt when he was 12.
Prejudice is shown to Joanis by teased, mocked and put down. When the hurricane came everyone blamed Joansi “The people of the village were very superstitious, they blamed Jonasi for the hurricane, Tasiri’s death, Bulai’s house being blown down and the drought” (Chapter 10 notes).
There was a drought in the village for 35 days. They said that he was evil. On the 35 day, a hurricane hit the village destroying houses and the people were very worried about the problem of hunger.
The Silent One showed us that if we go to school and learn we won’t be prejudice for example, if you travel you won’t be prejudice “ Aesake went to school and how he came to the village and helped his father the chief”
Prejudice is a problem in today’s world. It is seen in America. For example when the whites come on the bus, the blacks civil needs to move to the back and give the seats to the whites. Prejudice needs to be stopped so that people are not getting hurt.
The people also accused him of being a demon because Jonasi was a gifted person and always went to meet his friend (pet) turtle. “There is a lot of unrest because of the rumour about Jonasi and the turtle. Luisa is upset about this Tasiri and some other men force Jonasi to come with them. They used Jonasi as bait to trap the white turtle. They hurt Jonasi and it is Chief Vueti who stops them and warns them never to harm Jonasi again” (Chapter 7 notes).
One way prejudice was solved is Abraham Lincoln issued his memorable emancipation proclamation that declared the freedom of slaves within the confederacy. Another way that prejudice was solved was that Nelson Mandela brought together a nation of different race, culture as one and also did a lovely speech. “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear”. - Nelson Mandela.
Prejudice can and needs to be solved. From the Silent One novel we learnt that prejudice can be stopped by listening to others. For example when the Chief listened to Luisa. Another way is by traveling around the world. For example Jonasi was the only one that left the villagers. Therefore in the world prejudice would be solved.
The Silent One is a novel about Prejudice. It reminded us about how people can be treated if they‘re different and what the consequences for them might be for them.
