The Boy Who Was Afraid
In the novel “The Boy Who Was Afraid” by Armstrong Sperry, the main character is Mafatu.
The conflict Mafatu faced was his fear of sea. This was because his mum died while he was 3 years old, when they went fishing. “It was the sea that Mafatu feared” (Pg.2)
Mafatu changed from the beginning to the middle and by the end of the stories. “At the beginning of the book it was petrified of the sea”. I know because when he went fishing, he would get sick, dropped fishing lines and his friends said the he could be getting bad luck. His friends and family called him a coward. This was especially bad because he was the Chief’s Son and his name meant “Stout Heart”. (Pg. 4)
He decides to leave the island because he got mocked so much he is ashamed.
Middle as the story progresses, Mafatu has to change.
He was afraid of the sea, but to escape Hikueru because he had no choice but he has to face it because the island was surrounded by the water. His new courage was seen when he fought to keep his canoe from turning broadside. “Spray stung the boy’s flesh, blinded his eyes, chilled his marrow.”
On his new island, he showed he had changed and grown in courage he stole a spearhead from the sacred site. He was really scared because it bellowed to the eater of men and it covered in human bones. “Finely ground, sharp edged a spear for food, a weapon against attack.”
He started to known he had changed, he decided to kill a pig like his granddad so he could prove it to his village. “I will make such a necklace for myself from the tusks.” (Pg. 32)
I would recommend year 10 student to read the novel called “The Boy Who Was Afraid” by ArmStrong Sperry. This novel tells us how to face our fear. I can relate to this novel because I’m afraid of heights.
It’s also tells us how to survive on our own. An example from the novel is when Mafatu shows the audience needs shelter, food and water to survive.
